EPs for the Danger Doom Collector
Danger Doom released a 2006 EP called Occult Hymn as the follow-up to 2005's full-length album The Mouse and The Mask. It was made available on Adult Swim's website as a free download. Rap Reviews, which reviewed the album on July 5, 2006, gave it a 7.5 out of 10.
Occult Hymn was released with distinctive album art, even though it did not come out as a physical CD. The album art depicts MF Doom's menacing mask superimposed on a pair of white, spraypainted mouse ears, with crossbones underneath. This mask, mouse and crossbones motif is also present on the cover art for The Mouse and the Mask, which shows a stylized drawing of the mask, glinting turquoise, with a whiskered mouse nose sticking out.
The only new song on Occult Hymn is Korn Dogz. The rest of the tracks are skits or remixes of songs from The Mouse and the Mask, such as Sofa King and Space Ho's. Madlib, who teamed up with Doom on the album Madvillainy, takes over production duties from Danger Mouse on one track. The skits feature Adult Swim characters from shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, as well as characters who did not make it into the first album, such as the ones on Minoriteam.
The Occult Hymn EP is no longer available from Adult Swim's website, making it something of a collector's item. Here is a full listing of the tracks on Occult Hymn, courtesy of Underground 9:
- Skit 1
- El Chupa Nibre (Remix)
- Perfect Hair 2
- Korn Dogz
- Skit 2
- Sofa King (Danger Mouse Remix)
- Space Ho's (Madlib Remix)
According to Discogs, there is another Danger Doom EP out there, titled Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid. It was given away as a free CD with issue #195 of Hip Hop Connection Magazine in November 2005. It features several artists from Minnesota hip hop label Rhymesayers Entertainment, including Sage Francis, Brother Ali, and Slug. Jemini, who collaborated with Danger Mouse before The Grey Album, also takes the mic on one song.
Given that it was only released to magazine subscribers, this EP is an even rarer find than Occult Hymn. However, individual songs from it may turn up in the discographies of the other artists who collaborated with Danger Mouse and Doom on these songs. Here is the track listing, from Discogs. Note that tracks one and five are the same versions that appear on The Mouse and the Mask.
- Mincemeat, Danger Doom
- Social Distortion, Prince Po and MF Doom
- Doomage, Non-Prophets, Slug and Brother Ali (produced by MF Doom)
- Garden Gnomes, Danger Mouse and Sage Francis
- Perfect Hair, Danger Doom
- Knuckle Sanwich (Remix), Danger Mouse and Jemini
